Being a data geek I enjoy the massive amount of data our government makes available. I was poking around in the commerce department’s !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! data today and noticed they have a wealth of motor vehicle data up there.
So I made a graph that ended up being very startling...
Trucks man... trucks everywhere.

If I’m not wrong I think any SUV or Crossover regardless of whether it’s Body on Frame or not.

Trucks get away without many regulations because they are “work vehicles” and we will be dammed if we make business even a little inconvinient, but now individuals can buy wasteful, dangerous, large vehicles with little reprecussion.

Especially when the language is nice and vague.
“any motor vehicle having a gross vehicle weight rating (curb weight plus payload) of no more than 8,500 pounds (3,855.5 kg) which is “(1) Designed primarily for purposes of transportation of property or is a derivation of such a vehicle, or (2) Designed primarily for transportation of persons and has a capacity of more than 12 persons, or (3) Available with special features enabling off-street or off-highway operation and use.”
So what determines if it’s primary purpose is transporting property? Cargo area? Pixies?

While oil prices are currently ticking up due to unrest in the Middle East, shale fracking has likely made the US indicator (WTI) stay low at a fundamentals level for the foreseeable future. If people want jacked-up trucky things, there’s no economic pressure preventing them from buying them.

If it’s of any interest, Australia breaks their data up a bit differently. And one of the things we know as a result is that medium pickups (think Hilux, Ranger and their ilk) account for roughly 16% of total sales.
If the US is anything like Oz...even if you took out the CUVs and light/medium SUVs, you’d still have a trend...

Id need to find a wide dataset for that. I could do it from individual manufacturer data... Wonder where websites get that.
